A painting estimate should help you understand exactly what will happen in your home. A single total is difficult to compare when one proposal includes repairs, trim, and preparation while another covers only the wall finish. Use this checklist when planning an interior or exterior painting project in Maine.

1. Identify Every Surface in the Scope

Ask for the rooms or exterior areas to be named, along with the surfaces included. Walls, ceilings, doors, baseboards, window trim, siding, porches, and railings are different tasks. Note exclusions too: a kitchen repaint does not automatically include cabinet refinishing, and painting a room does not necessarily include its ceiling or closet.

2. Make Preparation Specific

Preparation is often where estimates differ most. Ask what cleaning, scraping, sanding, patching, caulking, and priming are included for your surfaces. A few nail holes require a different approach from extensive drywall damage or deteriorated exterior wood. If more damage becomes visible during the work, ask how the team will document it and discuss any change in scope before proceeding.

For exterior projects, ask how the contractor will assess moisture concerns and choose a suitable weather window for the selected coating. Painting over an unresolved leak or damaged substrate does not address the underlying problem.

3. Clarify the Paint System and Color Decisions

The estimate should identify the coating system or explain how products will be selected for the surface and its use. Discuss primer, finish, sheen, and the application work included. If a significant color change could affect coverage, ask how that will be handled in the written scope rather than assuming every project needs the same number of coats.

4. Discuss Access, Protection, and Timing

Talk through furniture, belongings, flooring, landscaping, pets, parking, and access to the work areas. Establish who moves what and how the work area will be protected. Ask how the schedule will be communicated and how weather or unexpected repairs could change it. For a home you occupy year-round, room sequencing can matter just as much as the start date.

5. Understand Completion and Follow-Up

Ask what cleanup is included, how the final walkthrough works, and who to contact afterward. If a warranty is offered, request its written coverage and exclusions. Also make sure you understand the payment schedule and how additional work is approved. Keep the final scope and any agreed changes together for easy reference.

Compare Scope Before Comparing Totals

Place competing proposals side by side and compare the same surfaces, preparation, materials, and services. A lower price may reflect a smaller scope; a higher price should have a clear explanation. Ask questions until you can describe what each proposal includes in your own words.
